Film Curator

Sydney Easter Suburbs
May 30, 2021
Monthly Commitment

Transition Bondi is looking for a volunteer to join the Steering Group as Film Curator.

About Transition Bondi

We are a community group, based on the principles of the global Transition Town movement. We run monthly events, and occasional workshops, such as our popular Film & Feast night, a monthly Dig Day at our community garden and a farmers’ market stall for free bike tune-ups and training, and Inner Transition, fostering self-care and group resilience. Transition Bondi brings people together to share, learn, and be active in creating a more sustainable community and world. We believe addressing the big issues of our time, from food security to dependence on fossil fuels, starts at the local level: here in Bondi.

Role

Role requires researching films and speakers for presentations at monthly Film & Feast event, held at Community Centre for around 40 people. Program suggestions are put to the Steering Group for decision.  A film is then acquired with licence, or a presenter is contacted for possible engagement.

Responsibilities

Identify films and speakers that could be relevant to the themes of the events-calendar year.

Research and watch the films to confirm they aren’t offensive, inaccurate or inappropriate. Films need to be based on well-accepted science, be free from bias toward religion, superstition, or party politics.  Not be associated with or promote the interests of large multinational corporations.

Take care of the licensing for films.

Liaise with possible speakers to lock them in.

Communicate with the Steering Group by joining meetings occasionally, or online, to co-ordinate arrangements for an interviewer of the speaker, if needed.

Prepare questions (which could also go out on social media) to be put to any person or panel present at the Film & Feast events.

Skills required

Communication skills, spoken and written. Enthusiasm and knowledge about environmental documentary films.

(Desirable) Have contacts in the film world (eg festivals); experience with obtaining licences for public screenings.

Other

An interest in the work of Transition Bondi is highly desirable.  We are a lively and well-functioning community environmental group – part of the global Transition Network.

Time commitment: 6 hours per month to research, view and select one film or presenter per month, with occasional visiting speakers/panel on the same topic.
