Transition Australia
Transition Australia is a community-run organisation that aims to create more environmentally sustainable communities across Australia by supporting local groups and promoting eco-friendly practices. As part of the international Transition movement, it encourages people to work together to address environmental and social challenges through practical local action.
At the core of Transition’s ethos is its “Head, Heart & Hands” approach. The Head focuses on building understanding of environmental and social issues while sharing knowledge of potential solutions through learning and critical thinking. The Heart emphasises empathy, connection and a sense of belonging, particularly for those most affected by these challenges. The Hands element encourages people to turn ideas into action through projects such as community gardens, repair initiatives and local sustainability programs. Together, these three elements create a balanced approach to community-led change.
Transition Australia’s website highlights many inspiring projects that demonstrate the power of local action. In Perth, Transition Town Vincent’s Britannia Community Food Forest uses volunteers to grow fruit trees, herbs and native plants, providing locally produced food while promoting sustainable gardening and community engagement. In Sydney, Transition Bondi’s Mend & Remake initiative teaches sewing, repair and upcycling skills, helping to reduce textile waste and combat fast fashion. Mend & Remake is also involved in Waverley Council’s quarterly Repair Café events, which extend circular economy principles by helping community members repair a wide range of items, from bicycles and jewellery to small electrical appliances and furniture.
Transition groups are also involved in a diverse range of other initiatives, including community energy projects, local resilience planning, seed-saving networks and neighbourhood sustainability workshops, reflecting the broad scope of community-led environmental action across Australia. These examples represent only a small sample of the valuable work being undertaken by Transition groups nationwide. Further information on local initiatives, workshops and community programs can be found at transitionaustralia.net. If you would like to be part of improving your local community and working towards a greener future, donations and volunteers are always welcome.
