What’s the Connection between Fossil Fuel Blockades and our Back Yards?
The world situation regarding oil restrictions could have a big impact on food security. Fertilizers and pesticides used in industrial (large scale) farming are made from fossil fuels, and without them crop yields are greatly reduced.
The Green Revolution – that saw food production increase massively as the world population has grown – is based on the use of chemical fertilizers. It has saved millions from starvation since the mid to late twentieth century. Farmers around the world who are due to plant food crops at this time will be suffering greatly as fertiliser shortages hit.
Permaculture, a smaller scale and more ‘natural’ way of producing food does not use chemical fertilizers, but compost instead. Transition Bondi follows the values of the Permaculture network – with key principles being Earth Care, People Care and Fair Share.
Transition Bondi is passionate about composting, and hosts two community composting systems (for locals and eateries to deposit their food scraps in). One is at the back of the lawn beside the Waverley Woollahra Art School 138 Bondi Rd. This activity is one of the most important, in the world of food production. If you want to develop skills in composting and growing food, remember to join our monthly garden bees, on the second Sunday morning of each month. See our website for more: www.transitionbondi.org
