How a Bondi Grassroots Project Is Reclaiming Urban Space
A neglected strip of land on Francis Street in Bondi is quietly becoming a testing ground for what community led biodiversity restoration can look like.
Each week, Kit from Transition Bondi and Patrick Franklyn from @ontheverge join a small group of residents to weed, plant and care for the site. Their focus is largely on Eastern Suburbs Banksia Scrub, or ESBS, a critically endangered ecological community once widespread across Sydney’s eastern suburbs.
The project is modest in scale, but its ambitions are broader. By reintroducing locally appropriate species, the group is creating habitat for insects, birds and pollinators while restoring a small part of Bondi’s ecological identity and eventually the dream is a habitat corridor across the city.
This is an initiative led by landscape architect Patrick Franklyn. On the Verge encourages communities to rethink roadside verges and other overlooked urban spaces as potential biodiversity corridors rather than empty strips of grass.
The approach is based on the idea that individual plantings, when repeated across a suburb, can form connected pockets of habitat to create corridors. These green links can support local wildlife, improve streetscapes and help residents understand the role they can play in urban conservation.
A potential partnership with Transition Bondi could help extend that vision locally. Transition Bondi could act as a facilitator, connecting residents with Patrick’s expertise, coordinating workshops and planting days, and helping communities navigate the practicalities of transforming public-facing land.
The benefits are not only environmental. Regular gardening offers time outdoors, gentle activity and a sense of purpose, while weekly gatherings create opportunities for neighbours to meet and build relationships.
On Francis Street, that process has already begun. What was once an overlooked patch of land is becoming something more valuable: a place for biodiversity, local action and community connection.
